the sky chamber

At the center of the Sky Chamber is a reflecting pool of dreamsteel, its surface a perfect unrippled mirror. Four chairs surround it; three are occupied. The magi have little care for the ungifted custom of setting the highest-ranked to gaze upon their inferiors. When so much business is transacted in thought, physical directions begin to lose even symbolic meaning.

Patience takes the open seat, and reaches out to the other three arch-magi. It’s as easy as joining flesh-and-blood hands. Archedons and archedamas pool energies, crafting a joined sigil, an ideogram that fills the room for an instant with the thought-shape of four names:

-Patience-Providence-
-Foresight-Temperance-

The names are meaningless, traditional, having nothing to do with the personal qualities of their holders. The fused sigil proclaims the commencement of formal business. The light in the chamber dims in response; the early-evening sky is replaced by a bowl of predawn violet with a warm line of tawny gold at the horizon. Archedon Temperance, seniormost of the four, sends forth:

-We return to the matter of the black contract proposed by Luciano Anatolius of Camorr.-

The demon took apart his life, moment by moment, instant to awful instant. It lasted a hundred years, perhaps, or a thousand – they had all the time there ever was, in that gray room – and toward the end he realized that the demon had been right. The physical torture had been kinder.

And it ended.

And once it had ended, it began again. there was a self-knowledge there he had not had the first time, which somehow made everything worse.

Now, as he spoke, he hated himself. there were no lies, no evasions, no room for anything except the pain and the anger.

He spoke. He no longer wept. And when he finished, a thousand years later, he prayer that now the demon would go to the wall, and bring down the skinning knife, or the choke-pear, or the screws.

“Again,” said the demon.

He began to scream. He screamed for a long time.

“Again,” said the demon, when he was done, as if nothing had been said.

It was like peeling an onion. This time through his life he learned about consequences. He learned the results of things he had done; things he had been blind to as he did them; the way he had hurt the world; the damage he had done to people he had never known, or met, or encountered. It was the hardest lesson yet.

“Again,” said the demon, a thousand years later.

He crouched on the floor, beside the brazier, rocking gently, his eyes closed, and he told the story of his life, re-experiencing it as he told it, from birth to death, changing nothing, leaving nothing out, facing everything. He opened his heart.

When he was done, he sat there, eyes closed, waiting for the voice to say, “Again,” but nothing was said. He opened his eyes.

Slowly, he stood up. He was alone.

At the far end of the room, there was a door, and as he watched, it opened.

A man stepped through the door. There was terror in the man’s face, and arrogance, and pride. The man, who wore expensive clothes, took several hesitant steps into the room, and then stopped.

When he saw the man, he understood.

“Time is fluid here,” he said to the new arrival.

Every year, I compile a 6forty collection that features the music that was in my ears while beach front with my family at the Outer Banks (South Nags Head, NC, mile post 19.5). I ended up working a bit more than I had anticipated, and several of those sessions were long – I found myself queuing this playlist repeatedly while I stared at my laptop screen. I’m confident that you’ll enjoy the mix as much as I do. It’s 102 minutes of perfect rock music.

The elements of the strange orb were immediately calculated, and it was at once conceded by all observers, that its path, at perihelion, would bring it into very close proximity with the earth. There were two or three astronomers, and these of secondary note, who resolutely maintained that a contact was inevitable. I cannot very well express to you the effect of this intelligence upon the people. For a few short days they would not believe an assertion which their intellect, so long employed among worldly considerations, could not in any manner grasp. But the truth of a vitally important fact soon makes its way into the understanding of even the most stolid. Finally, all men saw the astronomical knowledge lied not, and they awaited the comet. Its approach was not, at first, seemingly rapid; nor was its appearance of very unusual character. It was of a dull red, and had little perceptible train. For seven or eight days we saw no material increase in its apparent diameter, and but a partial alternation in its color. Meantime, the ordinary affairs of men were discarded, and all interests absorbed in a growing discussion, instituted by the philosophic, in respect to the cometary nature. Even the grossly ignorant aroused their sluggish capacities to such considerations. The learned now gave their intellect – their soul – to no such points as the allaying of fear, or to the sustenance of loved theory. They sought – they panted for right views. They groaned for perfect knowledge. Truth arose in the purity of her strength and exceeding majesty, and the wise bowed down and adored.   Edgar Allen Poe, The Conversation of Eiros and Charmion, The Tales of Edgar Allen Poe, ©1983 by Running Press

“Mr. Lightbody,” he began, dropping his eye to the notepad a moment before coming back at him with a professionally admonitory stare, “I’m in no position to make a diagnosis at this juncture. This is just the beginning. Why, we’ll need blood tests and count, urine and fecal analysis, you’ve got to go to the X-Ray Fluoroscopic Room, the Colon Department, we’ve got to have specialists examine your teeth, eyes, tonsils and tongue, we need to see how much acetone you’re exhaling and what your intestinal fluids look like. We won’t have a full picture until this evening, at the earliest.” He paused, squared his jaw, tugged at his tie. “I could make an educated guess, of course, judging from the color of your skin, the condition of your tongue, your general puniness and malaise…”

That sinking, doomed feeling came over Will again, but he fought it. Puniness? Malaise? Who was this self-serving, conceited, pompous, lantern-jawed hyena to be pronouncing judgement on him?

“Actually,” Linnimann went on, lecturing now, “we see any number of cases like yours — but I wouldn’t want to jump to conclusions. Nervous Exhaustion. Coffee neuralgia. Hyperhydrochloria. Autointoxication, certainly. But the Chief has already made that diagnosis.” He nodded his blond head sagely, smacked his lips, gently closed the notebook. “We’ll do the tests. You never know what might turn up.”  The Road to Wellville, T. Coraghessan Boyle, ©1993  Viking

Phototherapy, Thermotherapy, and Electrotherapy
This department employed both solar and electric light, with the latter used chiefly during winter. Phototherapy held a prominent place at Battle Creek, where the first electric light bath was constructed. Regarding the application of electricity, Kellogg noted that “electricity is not capable of accomplishing half the marvels that are claimed for it by many enthusiastic electrotherapists”. Nevertheless, he considered it valuable when used in conjunction with hydrotherapy, thermotherapy, and other methods. Kellogg, J.H., M.D., Superintendent (1908). The Battle Creek Sanitarium System. I repeat that in landscape arrangements alone is the physical nature susceptible of exaltation, and that, therefore, her susceptibility of improvement at this one point, was a mystery I had been unable to solve. My own thoughts on the subject had rested in the idea that the primitive intention of nature would have so arranged the earth’s surface as to have fulfilled at all points man’s sense of perfection in the beautiful, the sublime, or the picturesque; but that this primitive intention had been frustrated by the known geological disturbances–disturbances of form and color-grouping, in the correction or allaying of which lies the soul of art. The force of this idea was much weakened, however, by the necessity which it involved of considering the disturbances abnormal and unadapted to any purpose. It was Ellison who suggested that they were prognostic of death. He thus explained:–Admit the earthly immortality of man to have been the first intention. We have then the primitive arrangement of the earth’s surface adapted to his blissful estate, as not existent but designed. The disturbances were the preparations for his subsequently conceived deathful condition.

At that instant either his foot slipped or the brick gave way beneath his heel. He heard himself loose a yell of alarm, which panicked the birds lining the sill. They were up and off, their wing beats ironic applause, as he flailed on the wall. His panicked gaze went first to his feet, then to the yard below.

No, not the yard; that had disappeared. It was the carpet he saw. It had been entirely unrolled, and it filled the yard from wall to wall.

What happened next occupied mere seconds, but either his mind was lightening fast, or the moments played truant, for it seemed he had all the time he needed…

Time to appreciate the startling intricacy of the design laid out beneath him: an awesome proliferation of exquisitely executed detail. Age had bled brightness from the colors of the weave, mellowing vermilion to rose, and cobalt to chalky blue, and here and there the carpet had become threadbare, but from where Cal teetered the effect was still overwhelming.

Every inch of the carpet was worked with motifs. Even the border brimmed with designs, each subtly different from its neighbor. The effect was not overbusy; every detail was clear to Cal’s feasting eyes. In one place a dozen motifs congregated as if banded together; in another, they stood apart like rival siblings. Some kept their station along the border; others spilled into the main field, as if eager to join the teeming throng there.

In the field itself, ribbons of color described arabesques across a background of sultry browns and greens, forms that were pure abstraction – bright jottings from some wild man’s diary – jostling with stylized flora and fauna. But this complexity paled beside the centerpiece of the carpet: a giant medallion, its colors as various as a summer garden, into which a hundred subtle geometries had been cunningly woven, so that the eye could reach each pattern as flower or theorem, order or turmoil, and find each choice echoed somewhere in the grand design.

Here we all choose a different way and different rules to disobey.

Birds: Where are we?
There’s no understanding in this
Valley of Understanding.

Hoopoe: Here we must pay
close attention. We are following a
path. No one knows how long we
have to go forward or how far.

Do you know the story of the bird
who lost his way? And nobody
was looking for him?
He turned into stone…and cried.
He cried little pebbles…

If all the heavens with all their stars
exploded in this valley, they would
be but a leaf fluttering in the wind.
Here a tiny fish is mightier than
a whale and nobody can say why.

The astrologer bird traces all
the constellations and planets on
his tablet of sand.
Then the wind picks up and…
scatters his design to dust.

How solid is our world…
and yet it is nothing but grains
of sand.
